How Turbocharging changed Porsche forever

The naturally aspirated flat-six has always had a special place in the hearts of Porsche purists. If the engine is cooled by God’s good air, then it is even more heartwarming. The connection between man and machine is just more pure without forced induction.

To fully understand what has led to the latest turbocharged Porsches, you have to go all the way back to the late ’60s.

Computer mod causes turbo damage

A not-uncommon cause of engine failure in newer vehicles is the use of non-factory software to increase the turbocharger boost pressure beyond factory set limits, possibly with a chip or a ‘tune’ that runs the engine to make more horsepower, by basically overworking the turbocharger.

This causes the engine to operate outside of factory parameters, which makes more power, but, in some cases, risks engine damage. This article outlines the problems that such actions can cause.

The Turbocharger May Blow Out The Flame Of Natural Aspiration

We may be watching the demise of the naturally-aspirated engine. Turbos are everywhere, and it may already be too late. Buyers and automakers are reaping the benefits, perhaps too spoiled by now to give it up.

Turbochargers increase an engine’s power on the fly, and we’re living through the second epoch of forced induction. The first era of widespread turbos happened because fuel injection became more common and capable during the 1980s. Turbos had been a novelty in the age of carburation. Now, they’re practically an invasive species.

Dealers warned of sub-standard East European turbos

Dealers and garages are being warned not to fit cut-price remanufactured turbochargers to cars after a series of engine failures following the fitting of units imported from Eastern Europe.

The call comes from Turbo Technics, the specialist UK remanufacturer of turbochargers, who said there has been a rise in the number of reported failures from garages and motorists fitting imported replacements which have subsequently failed.
